The Nigeria Dental Association, in collaboration with Unilever Nigeria, manufacturers of Pepsodent Toothpaste, held a walk in Lagos last Friday to celebrate the World Oral Health Day.

While the organisers held free dental checkups and handed out free packs of Pepsodent toothpaste and oral health educational materials to passers-by during the walk, the occasion afforded them the opportunity to educate Nigerians on the need to maintain a healthy oral hygiene.

Speaking at the event, the Manager, Oral Care at Unilever Nigeria, Toluwaleke Salu, said there was a need to prevent tooth decay, which he described as the world’s most widespread disease, by imbibing good oral care habits.

He said, “Tooth decay is a global widespread disease which affects three out of five children and almost all adults. This disease can be prevented via good oral hygiene practices. This health walk is part of Unilever Nigeria continuous effort to fight oral diseases in Nigeria, and promote good oral hygiene.

“Pepsodent consistently advocates the need for Nigerians to imbibe the culture of brushing two times daily by using fluoride toothpaste. We remain committed to improving the oral health of 10 million Nigerian children by 2020, through the Pepsodent ‘Brush Day and Night’ Schools Programme, where we educate schoolchildren on the importance of brushing two times in a day (morning and night)”.

Also, speaking to journalists, the President of the Nigerian Dental Association, Dr Bode Ijarogbe said the walk was aimed at promoting awareness of the issues surrounding oral health and to emphasise the importance of good oral health  worldwide.”
