The Federal Road Safety Corps has said that its officers will not hesitate to arrest and slam fines on owners of overloaded  school buses.

The Sector Commander of the FRSC in Osun State, Mr. Anthony Oko, said this in an interview with our correspondent in Osogbo on Wednesday on the sidelines of a seminar entitled, ‘ Positive attitudinal performance ‘ organised for the agency’s personnel in the state.

He said the impact of crash on pupils in some school busses was always very serious because of the way school drivers usually pack them making them sit almost suffocate even without any accident.

Oko said the FRSC would no longer allow pupils to be packed on school buses like lifeless objects because of the negative effects such would have on the occupants incase of any crash.

He said pupils should also be made to sit comfortably on school buses because they were not lesser humans than the adults.

Oko said, “There is a clampdown on overloading now all over the nation and pupils should be comfortable while on school buses. They are not supposed to be packed on the buses. When buses are overloaded, with any little crash, you will see the degree of injuries sustained by these kids but if the buses are in good condition and they are not overloaded, God forbid even if there is a crash, the impact will be minimal. There must be safety gadgets which will protect occupants.”

He also reiterated the position of the FRSC on the directive that school buses should be painted in yellow colour.  He explained that yellow colour is most attention grabbing colour and would make such buses very visible on the road.

The FRSC boss said the directive was given in order to ensure the safety of pupils especially on the highway.

He said, “The directive that all school buses should be painted yellow colour is still in force. The essence is that the yellow colour make let road users know that a bus conveying school children is on the road. Presently we are trying to enumerate schools in the state, public  and private schools that have school buses. It is on going and this is the second phase more or less. This is the preparation for the real action.

“Within Osun State now, we doing everything possible to make sure that every school abides by this. But it is not only the issue of painting their buses in yellow but there are specification for vehicles that should carry pupils.”
