Nothing to prove

Argentina legend Diego Maradona has made a pretty decent claim about Lionel Messi’s critics on performing on the international stage.

Messi has certainly dominated football at a European level, with performances in the Champions League and La Liga.

He is currently the second highest goalscorer in Europe right now, just behind Mohamed Salah who is having a stunning season.

Though, one thing that Messi has never quite mastered is international football.

The Argentine star has not been able to win the World Cup with the national side and has been criticised for his performances at the biggest stage in world football.

Leo Messi during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 Second Leg match FC Barcelona and Chelsea FC at Camp Nou on March 14, 2018 in Barcelona, Spain.

Argentina almost failed to qualify for the World Cup in 2018 after poor performances from several of their key players.

Though, in this last game, their main man Messi stepped up and delivered, scoring a hat-trick to seal their place in Russia.

Now, with the World Cup on the horizon, the questions over Lionel Messi’s international performances have been raised yet again.

Though, one player who knows a thing or two about dominating the international stage has backed him to just forget about the critics even if he cannot win the World Cup.

That man is Diego Maradona.

‘I would advise Messi to keep playing, to enjoy the game,’ Maradona told Omnisport via Goal.

‘He has to forget about the critics, if he can win or not the World Cup, the Champions League or the Copa del Rey.

‘He doesn’t have to demonstrate anything. He has to enjoy the game into the field.’
