According to the scanned copy of the pay slip published by the speaker, he earned N402.530.37 monthly before statutory deduction.

How accurate is this information made public by the Speaker?

Abdulmumin Jibrin who is a suspended member of the House of Representative had tweeted his dismay at the amount the Speaker was earning saying if the pay slip was accurate, then it meant he was earning more than him.

Dogara’s pay slip

A fact check by Premium Times revealed that while they largely correlated with the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission design, some things are still missing.

A breakdown of the figures provided by the speaker showed that Mr. Dogara earned N206, 425.83, N175, 461.96 and N20, 642.58 as basic salary, constituency allowance and recess allowance, respectively, from January through March.

Similarly, the speaker’s payslip showed he earned N20,642.58 as monthly recess allowance which is N247, 710.96 per annum, which is about 10 per cent of his basic salary

Mr. Dogara claimed N175, 461.96 was his constituency allowance which is N2, 105, 543. 52 per annum which is N247, 711.47 more than what RMAFC recommended as his constituency allowance.

Significantly, Dogara’s pay slip only showed three of several categories of allowances and entitlements that the RMAFC prescribed for him and other lawmakers.

Beyond the basic allowance, Dogara is entitled to constituency and recess allowances, provisions for accommodation, vehicle maintenance, fuel allowance, entertainment and utility allowances, responsibility allowance, annual leave allowance, wardrobe, hardship allowance, newspapers allowance, amongst others and all these run into tens of millions of Naira.

Also, lawmakers receive estacode when they travel on assignments.

It is also reported that lawmakers receive N15 million every three months for running of office although this is illegal and they have never admitted receiving it.

Details of annual budget of the National Assembly is kept secret so it is difficult to tell how much Dogara truly earns but what he made public is part of the allowances he and other lawmakers get.
