The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, has said the smooth conduct of the 2015 general elections has proved the international media wrong.

2015 Elections: Media Got It wrong – Jega

Prior to the elections many Nigerians as well as the international community feared that the wide spread violence which occurred in the 2011 elections might reoccur.

But Jega on May 21, Thursday, at the INEC headquarters in Abuja noted that the outcome of the elections proved that these predictions were false.

According to The Nation, speaking with a delegation from the Ambassador of Mexico in Nigeria, Marco Antonio Garcia Blanco, he said prior to the polls the international media created a false impression that the conduct of the elections could end Nigeria as a country.

According to him, the elections turned out to be far from what the doomsday predictions were. He however admitted that the elections were not perfect but stressed that the polls were both nationally and internationally seen as free, fair, credible and also peaceful.

We know that the elections had not been perfect, we know that it was better than 2011″, he added.

Many are suggesting that Atahiru Jega remains at the helms of INEC following the exemplary manner in which he oversaw the conduct of INEC. Jega has however declared that he would not serve another term as boss of the electoral body when his first tenure expires in June, even if he is asked.
